Protect the public

Protect the public

Our first priority is to protect the public. We do this in partnership with many other organisations including the police, courts, prisons, local authorities, health service and voluntary organisations.

Multi-Agency Public Protection (MAPPA) teams began operating in April 2001 to use more robust management systems for those offenders who live in our communities through the sharing of information and expertise. The teams, comprising police, prison, probation and other relevant agencies ensure joint working and communication effectively manages risk to the public. In the most serious cases MAPPA can recommend increased police monitoring, special steps to protect victims and the use of closely supervised accommodation. The work of the MAPPAs is available to the public in the form of the MAPPA annual report published jointly by the NPS, the Police and the Prison Service.
